Item Description:

The Capped Bust dime was minted from 1809 to 1837, in two slightly different varieties. On the obverse side, it features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with the word “Liberty” inscribed on the headband. The reverse side shows an eagle holding an olive branch with arrows, which symbolize peace and strength, and bears a US shield on its chest. The Capped Bust Dime was also the first to include its value in cents, marked as 10c just below the eagle.

The design was created by John Reich, who was born in 1768 in Bavaria, and immigrated to America in 1800s as an indentured servant. He was discovered by the chief coiner at the US mint and eventually became an assistant engraver under Robert Scot. Unfortunately, Reich never gained recognition for his work, which was usually attributed to Scot as the chief engraver, and he resigned in 1817.
