Item Description:

Includes glass top leatherette display box.

  • Origin: Roman Empire
  • Authority: Emperor Aurelian
  • Date: 270 - 275 CE
  • Denomination: AR (debased silver) antoninianus
  • Mint: Serdica (modern day Sofia, Bulgaria)
  • Size: 20mm, 5.48g
  • Type Number: RIC V Aurelian 258 (rarer type, see note)
  • Obverse: IMP AVRELIANVS AVG - Aurelian, radiate, cuirassed, right
  • Reverse: CONSERVATOR AVG - Asclepius, standing, looking left, holding serpent-entwined staff
  • Notes: This coin matches RIC V Aurelian 258 except for the mintmark, which is "S" instead of "SERD" as it appears in the RIC listing. There are known variants of this design that are not described in RIC, of which this appears to be one. Asclepius was the Roman god of medicine, whose snake-intwined staff has become a symbol of healing that has endured to the modern day.
