These copper coins were issued by the provisional government during the Mexican Revolution, in order to address currency shortages caused by the war. The obverse side shows Benito Juarez, Mexico's first indigenous president, with the legend reading "ESTADO L. Y S. DE OAXACA" (Free and Sovereign State of Oaxaca). The reverse shows the denomination and the legend "MONEDA PROVISIONAL" (Provisional Currency).
The Mexican Revolution began on November 20, 1910, fueled by widespread dissatisfaction with the policies of President Porfirio Diaz, who favored wealthy elites at the expense of the working and rural poor. His regime's oppressive tactics led to his ousting by Francisco Madero, whose weak leadership eventually paved the way for a civil war led by Venustiano Carranza in 1914.
Amidst this chaos, which lasted until 1920 and resulted in about a million casualties, there was a severe shortage of official currency. To address this, the provisional government issued necessity pieces, including copper 10 centavos coins featuring Benito Juarez, Mexico’s first indigenous president. Juarez's image on these coins symbolized a return to the people's rights and a stark contrast to the oppressive regimes that followed him. Officially, the revolution ended with the creation of the 1917 Constitution, although skirmishes continued into the next decade.
