Item Description:

  • Title: 實語教童子教 - Jitsugokyo Teachings for Children
  • Date: Late 1800s
  • Size: 6.75 x 4.5 inches
  • Condition: Moderately scuffed and stained cover, with title card likely replaced at some point. Pages are yellowed but in good condition, with one spot of minor bug damage.
  • Notes: Jitsugokyo was a type of traditional Japanese primary school textbook that had enduring popularity for centuries, until the cultural shift that occurred in the early Meiji era. The textbooks focused on teaching truthfulness and morality.

Japanese books are read right to left (instead of left to right) and are bound on the right side, contrary to those in Western languages. The pages may be double layered, and care must be taken to ensure that they do not separate when flipping through. The book must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of bugs.
