Item Description:

Includes an archival grade document sleeve.

  • Origin: United States of America
  • Date: 1942 - 1944
  • Denomination: 1 Dollar (silver certificate)
  • Size: 6.15 x 2.6 inches
  • Face Side: Bust of George Washington, facing right, looking forward. To the right, the Seal of the Treasury Department. At either end, small black "HAWAII" overprint.
  • Back Side: On the left, Great Seal of the United States. In the center, inscription of denomination. On the right, a bald eagle behind a shield, wings spread, head facing left, holding olive branch in right talon, holding 13 arrows in left talon, holding ribbon in beak, below 13 stars. Large "HAWAII" overprint.
  • Notes: After the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II, the U.S. government became highly concerned about the possibility of a full scale Japanese invasion of Hawaii. As this would have allowed the Japanese to seize a large amount of U.S. dollars from financial institutions and private individuals on the islands, an emergency issue of paper currency was enacted for use specifically in Hawaii. These notes were overprinted with "HAWAII" in black ink, so that they could be recognized and rendered useless in the event of an invasion.
