Notes: The El Cazador was a Spanish brig that sank in the Gulf of Mexico in 1784 while carrying 450,000 Spanish reales to stabilize the struggling economy of Spanish Louisiana. Commissioned by King Carlos III, the ship, under Captain Gabriel de Campos y Pineda, departed Veracruz for New Orleans but never arrived. Spain’s search efforts failed, and it was declared lost at sea in June 1784. Over two centuries later, on August 2, 1993, the trawler Mistake accidentally discovered its treasure when its fishing net hauled up a trove of Spanish silver coins. The recovered coins were later appraised in 2005.
