Item Description:

Title: The Beauty of the Orient (東洋之佳人)

Author: Tokai Sanshi (東海散士)

Publication Year:  Meiji 20 (1887)

Size: 9 x 5.75 inches

Condition: One string loose in the binding, minor scuff marks on cover, interior page on front cover is loose. The book is in excellent shape otherwise.

This book discusses the natural beauty of Asia, with a two page engraving of Mount Fuji. The style of the illustration shows western influence, which is characteristic of the late 1800s after Japan was forced to end its isolation and enter the international stage.

Japanese books are read right to left (instead of left to right) and are bound on the right side, contrary to those in Western languages. The pages may be double layered, and care must be taken to ensure that they do not separate when flipping through. The book must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of bugs.
