Title: Chronicle of Treasured Knowledge for Women, Vol. 4 (女重寶記)
Publication Year: Genroku 14 (1702), though this book may be a later reprint from the 1800s
Size: 9 x 6.5 inches
Condition: Cover has heavy damage, with the outer layer peeling off in some areas. Some torn edges on interior pages and bug damage present (no live bugs). The book is still secure enough to be flipped through and binding is solid.
This volume comes from a series of books describing useful knowledge and skills for Japanese women in the Edo period. Volume four contains information about cultural skills, such as learning calligraphy, poetry, playing instruments, singing, and burning incense, as well as more practical skills such as curing certain ailments and removing stains.
Japanese books are read right to left (instead of left to right) and are bound on the right side, contrary to those in Western languages. The pages may be double layered, and care must be taken to ensure that they do not separate when flipping through. The book must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of bugs.
